Advocating for Mental Health: Our #1 Priority for the Texas Legislative Session

The Pearland Chamber of Commerce has identified Mental Health as our top priority for the upcoming Texas legislative session. Our community faces an urgent need for decisive action to address a critical gap in Brazoria County—a dedicated in-patient crisis center.

The Need for Local Mental Health Resources

Currently, Brazoria County has no psychiatric beds. Through conversations with hospitals, counselors, educators, businesses, and law enforcement, it has become clear: we cannot continue to let this lack of essential care persist. For those experiencing mental health crises, the absence of local in-patient care puts families, emergency responders, and surrounding health systems under significant strain.

A Data-Driven Approach to Advocacy

To advocate effectively, the Pearland Chamber has conducted a thorough study on the mental health needs across Brazoria County. We invite you to review this comprehensive report to understand the scale of the challenge and the solutions we're proposing.

Join Us in Advocating for an In-Patient Crisis Center

In the upcoming legislative session, the Pearland Chamber, alongside our partners, will strongly advocate for the establishment of an in-patient crisis center. Additionally, we will emphasize the importance of expanding community-based mental health services that can prevent crises before they escalate.

Additional Actionable Solutions

  • Expand Treatment Programs: Increase access to opioid and alcohol treatment services, including more Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs).
  • Create a Mental Health Crisis Unity: Establish a specialized mental health response team to handle emergencies, freeing up police and EMS for other critical situations.
  • Strengthen Community-Based Services: Expand school and community mental health programs to catch problems early, keeping residents out of hospitals and reducing long-term costs.
  • Secure Funding and Improve Reimbursement Rates: Expanded funding and improved reimbursement rates can reduce the economic and social burden.

Mental Health: A Community-Wide Concern

Mental health impacts everyone—families, businesses, schools, and emergency services. Together, we can build a healthier, safer Brazoria County. The Pearland Chamber is committed to keeping you updated as we approach the session and look forward to your ongoing support in this vital effort.

Thank you for standing with the Pearland Chamber in our mission to serve business, promote growth, and empower our community.
